Jane shakes her head. “No, I see no point in making this anything more than it has to be. As long

as you both understand it is out of the question, there’s no reason for us to drag out this

conversation.”

“Ma, what if I wanted to be with her? It’s not like you ever adopted me, so I don’t understand

why you are making such a big deal out of this.”

“What the hell are you doing,” Cailin communicated to Jess using only her eyes.

Jess couldn’t help it though. The more she thought about her parents forbidding her , the madder

she got.

Maura looked at Jess as her jaw dropped. “You can’t be serious Jessica Lynn. She’s your aunt.”

“I’ve never viewed her as an aunt. She has always been more like a friend!” Jess’s voice rose

more with every word.

Jane was glad they had chosen to take this to Mauras office, which was sound proof. Jane rubbed

her temples. “Come on Jess. Don’t be ridiculous.”

“What is ridiculous is two people who are not my real parents, acting like i’m commiting some

kind of incest.” As soon as the words flew out of her mouth, Jess knew she said the wrong thing.

She wanted to kick herself when she saw the hurt flash across both Jane and Maura’s faces. For

the second time that day, she opened her mouth and inserted her foot. Her eyes immediately fell

on Maura, who had a tear roll down her cheek.

“Mom, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that, but mom, I love her. What if someone told you that

you couldn’t be with ma.”

“That’s comparing apples and oranges Jess. Jane is not my aunt.”
