INHWA JIN, KOREAN DESIGNERHow would you describeyour design aesthetic?In this collection, I was inspired by the cultureof the past and present young people who wererebellious and longing for freedom. I reinterpretedit by mixing a modern street fashion with suitssymbolizing the resistance of American subculturein the 40s.Korea is known to be a trendsetterin fashion but this also oftencreates a culture of fast fashion.How do you differentiate yourdesign process from this?Korea is very sensitive to fashion and therefore,fast-fashion culture has developed tremendously.Dongdaemun is the biggest source of production,and Koreans are now increasingly interested in theoverconsumption of clothing. In a way, I produceclothes with a process that is very opposite to theproduction process of Dongdaemun, so I thinkit is different from other brands. If we continue to provide consumerswith eco-friendly direct and indirect experiences byconstantly developing and introducing sustainableclothing, we will be able to grow into a brandfor a better future someday by providing betteralternatives and measures than now.What is your message to people onbecoming more conscious about theenvironment when it comes to fashion?I've been running a vintage shop for abouttwo months now, and I realized that I have apreconceived notion of what many people woreand what they recycled. If we are aware of howserious the environmental and human rights issuesare due to the overspending on clothing, I think itwill help us break that stereotype. I think one of themost important duties of designers is to develop avariety of content and ideas so that many peoplecan be interested in these issues.35
