NamwonHiking is a wonderful activity that is possibleduring any season, although you may have yourseasonal preference in mind. Hiking in wintercan be more of a challenge, but if you’re properlyequipped, it can be an enjoyable and thrilling experience.A great place to hike is the Jirisan mountain range, whichencompasses a few different cities and areas in the southernarea of Korea. One specific hike along the rangeis within the city of Namwon. You canfind numerous trails which lead todifferent peaks. One such peak iscalled Baraebong (바래봉) peak, along the Jiri mountain range,in Namwon city.We attempted this hikeduring late winter, inFebruary. It had snowedabout a week earlier, whichwas a crucial detail thatslipped our minds. Everylocal that we passed alongthe trek up the mountain hadski poles that were good forsticking and digging in a good gripinto the snow and ice. We wished wehad brought some, too. However, we hadto manage with just our hiking boots and winterjackets. There are some very steep parts up this mountain, with nothing to hold onto for support. It was doubly difficultwith snow and black ice hidden underfoot. We had to hug theside of the trails and step in the slush that provided somesafety from the ice in the middle of the trail, where the sunhardly shone.Only one of us slipped and fell on the ice, and soon we kept onour way. This was an unplanned twist in our hiking plans, asit had been sunny ever since the snowfall the previous week. But mountains will hold onto snow for a few weeks. Once weneared the summit and finally left the snow and ice behind, weencountered very strong winds that nearly knocked us off ourfeet. The winds chilled us to the bone, and made us feel as ifwe were jumping out of a plane. However, the hikewas full of interesting views that changedevery few kilometers with the terrain.Once we struggled up tothe summit, the view wasspectacular. The rays of thesun shone down througha partially overcast sky, creating a breathtakingeffect of dappledsunlight. The sun streakscascading around themountains before us wasan unforgettable sight, anda perfect shot for photographyenthusiasts. As is expected, thehike down was much smoother andquicker, and by that time, the sun hadturned all the snow and ice to slush. Thegreen spring shoots poking out from around thewintry snow was a lovely sight, which is why this hike would belovely no matter the season. However, for winter, come preparedwith gripping hiking boots, hats, face scarves and hiking poles. It’s a thrilling adventure in winter, almost akin to snowshoeing.Try Baraebong peak this summer, or if you’re truly brave, waituntil next winter to attempt the snow-covered climb.7
