“I can feel the echoes so clearly,” she whispered. “Here”—she
pointed to Sophie’s right hand. “And here”—she moved her finger
toward Sophie’s forehead.
Sophie, Elwin, and Edaline all exchanged a look.
“Echoes?” Elwin repeated. “Is that the reason for the anomalies I’m
seeing?”
“I’m sure it is.” She moved closer, reaching out as if she were going
to touch Sophie’s forehead, but before her fingers made contact she
whipped her hand away. “They’re strong. Very strong.”
“Don’t look at me,” Tam said. “I have no idea what any of this
means.”
“Of course you don’t,” Lady Zillah told him. “You’re too new to
your studies.”
“Then would you care to enlighten us?” Magnate Leto asked.
“Light has nothing to do with this,” she argued, waving her fingers
back and forth over Sophie’s hand. “The echoes are a remnant. A
souvenir from an extraordinary encounter. Proof that this girl’s been
touched by shadowflux.”
