We had a walking tour of the Kampong Gelam area in
Bugis. This is a culturally significant area in Singapore for
the Malay community as it comprise the previous Istana
(the Palace for the Sultan of Singapore) and the main
Mosque Masjid Sultan. The pandemic and the nearby
construction site has had a detrimental effect on the area
which sees less foot traffic due to the lack of tourists. It
was great to have an introduction to unassuming districts
that held great historical value and understand how the
current community works together to conserve the
cultural aspects of the area. We had fun and it was nice
to finally have our first walk after the pandemic as an
office.
The Hong Kong Lighting Detectives started to have events
since 2016. After long hiatus due to the pandemic, we
finally had one night walk event in the West Kowloon
Cultural District. This area is one of the largest cultural
projects in the world, combining art, education, open
space, retail, restaurants, and entertainment facilities.
The aim of the project was to investigate architectural
and landscape lighting, and its impact on the
neighbourhood. A review session was held after the
walk. Each group shared and discussed interesting
perspectives on architectural and landscape lighting.
