Fishing Light Sept.30-Oct.2
Squid is Tsushima’s local specialty and they are
caught by luring them with light. This fishing light
has been ubiquitous in Tsushima's nightscape
throughout time. Lighting Detectives traveled to
Tsushima island to survey this nightscape, a
product of local culture and livelihood, rather than
an elaborate lighting design. At night, many boats
were off shore in the open sea under a night sky full
of stars. We captured the contrasting sea of
shadows and fishing light for our records and also
caught 10 squid.
Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto Nov.10-12
Hitoyoshi City in Kumamoto Prefecture was hit hard
in July 2020 by devastating flood waters. In the
midst of rebuilding, we were curious as to the part
lighting will play in the task. We interviewed several
hot spring hotel owners and city officials to examine
and its effects how lighting become a keyword of
reconstruction.
Sawara, Chiba Nov.4-5
About 70 km from Tokyo, Sawara is located along
the Onogawa River, a tributary to Tonegawa River.
We surveyed the nightscape along Onogawa River,
a district designated for townscape planning.
Actually, this is our first survey in Chiba Prefecture.
Water transportation was used extensively
throughout the district, but deteriorated after a
period of rapid growth. The town has been recently
trying to rebuild itself as a tourist destination.
