First, the sustainable management of a region's natural assets needs research <strong>and</strong> innovation <strong>to</strong><br />

further build knowledge <strong>and</strong> practical outcomes in terms of improved preservation <strong>and</strong><br />

management instruments, practices <strong>and</strong> applications. Second, a region's natural assets can be<br />

the very start of innovation activities <strong>and</strong> the development of new technologies or solutions,<br />

as <strong>for</strong> instance in the case of renewable energy sources but also the expansion of the bioeconomy.<br />

There<strong>for</strong>e innovative methods need <strong>to</strong> be taken in<strong>to</strong> account <strong>to</strong> moni<strong>to</strong>r <strong>and</strong> manage nature in<br />

broad partnerships that include the business community, the agriculture <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>estry sec<strong>to</strong>r,<br />

civil society <strong>and</strong> municipalities. Action is also very much needed in the realm of social<br />

innovation, <strong>to</strong> engage communities positively in the preservation of the local natural resources<br />

<strong>and</strong> assets.<br />
