agati-dhamma (Pali): biased views, ways <strong>of</strong> understanding and<br />

behaviour, wrong courses <strong>of</strong> perception. Arises out <strong>of</strong> desire, anger, fear<br />

and ignorance.<br />

Ajahn Buddhadasa: A highly respected Thai monk who lived<br />

from 2449-2536 (1906-1993), and founded Suan Mokh monastery in<br />

Chaya province, Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Thailand. Known throughout <strong>the</strong> world for<br />

his all-encompassing, contemporary, and highly accessible teachings.<br />

akaraniyakicca (Pali): <strong>The</strong> four things never to be done by a<br />

Bhikkhu (sexual intercourse, stealing, killing and falsely claiming<br />

superhuman qualities).<br />

anagarika (Pali): A homeless one; one who enters <strong>the</strong> holy life<br />

without formally entering <strong>the</strong> Sangha.<br />

anusasana (Pali): Advice given to new Bhikkus as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ordination ceremony. Comprises <strong>the</strong> four akaraniyakicca and <strong>the</strong> four<br />

nissaya.<br />

anatta (Pali): Non-self, not-self. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Three Characterisctics<br />

anicca (Pali): Impermanence.<br />

arahant (Pali): One who has attained nibbana.<br />

ariya (Pali): Literally: noble.<br />

ariyapuggala (Pali): Literally: noble person; Noble Enlightened<br />

Being. A person who has reached one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> four stages <strong>of</strong><br />

enlightenment.<br />

ariya-sangha (Pali): Sangha in <strong>the</strong> highest sense: <strong>the</strong> group <strong>of</strong><br />

Noble Enlightened Beings (ariyapuggalas).<br />

ariyavamsa (Pali): Literally: <strong>the</strong> noble lineage – <strong>the</strong> lineage <strong>of</strong><br />

enlightened beings; specifically defined by <strong>the</strong> Buddha as those who<br />

possess <strong>the</strong> qualities <strong>of</strong> contentment and fewness <strong>of</strong> wishes.<br />

Bhikkhu (Pali): Literally: beggar; or one who sees <strong>the</strong> danger in<br />

samsara. Buddhist monk.<br />

� For <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong> simplicity, in this edition all Pali-words are given in ordinary<br />

English spelling, omitting special diacritical signs.<br />
