Ordination:<br />

<strong>The</strong> Announcements<br />

After <strong>the</strong> Going Forth – sometimes in <strong>the</strong> same<br />

ceremony – Bhikkhu ordination (upasampada) is given.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> ceremony <strong>of</strong> upasampada, a certain canonical<br />

teaching called anusasana (announcements) needs to<br />

be recited. <strong>The</strong> teacher announces <strong>the</strong> nissaya, <strong>the</strong><br />

minimum four requisites upon which a Bhikkhu’s life is<br />

dependent (almsfood, robes made from cloth wrapping<br />

up corpses, <strong>the</strong> dwelling at <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>of</strong> a tree and fermented<br />

urine as medicine), and <strong>the</strong> akaraniyakicca, <strong>the</strong><br />

four things never to be done by a Bhikkhu (sexual<br />

intercourse, stealing, killing a human being and falsely<br />

claiming superhuman qualities). <strong>The</strong> anusasana must be<br />

recited in Pali. In <strong>the</strong> ordination ceremony on Dec. 15 th ,<br />

2005 <strong>Luang</strong> <strong>Por</strong> gave <strong>the</strong> following brief summary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

anusasana in his own words.<br />

<strong>The</strong> procedure <strong>of</strong> ordination into monkhood becomes<br />

complete by <strong>the</strong> chanting <strong>of</strong> a formal act <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sangha, which we<br />

have just finished. So, now you are Bhikkhus in this Dhamma-<br />

Vinaya.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> lifestyle <strong>of</strong> a monk it is necessary to have rules for<br />

proper conduct and practice. We consider it our duty to follow<br />

<strong>the</strong>se guidelines, and we have to fulfil this duty correctly, making<br />

sure that our conduct and practice is in line with <strong>the</strong> principles<br />

handed down to us by <strong>the</strong> Buddha. This requires that we do some<br />

study and develop understanding.<br />
