Teror:
trails, nature, and tradition
At the heart of Teror is the majestic Basilica
of Our Lady of El Pino, a symbol
of devotion and spirituality that has endured
over the centuries. The legend
of the Virgin of El Pino, patron saint of
the island, is intertwined with the cultural
identity of Gran Canaria, turning
this sanctuary into a spiritual beacon
that attracts pilgrims and casual visitors
alike.
Apart from its monuments and historic
squares, Teror reveals its authenticity
through its hiking trails. These paths
are not only physical routes, but experiences
that awaken the senses and connect
travellers with the very essence of
the island. Exploring Teror on foot constitutes
a journey that reveals the richness
of its natural and cultural heritage.
The month of September is a time of
spiritual fervour and colour in Teror with
the celebration of the Pilgrimage of the
Virgin of El Pino. This emblematic event
fills the town’s streets with the procession
of pilgrims, fusing the sacred and
the festive in a unique display of devotion.
The Basilica becomes the epicentre
of this celebration, attracting visitors
from all over the world.
The fact is that anyone can walk to Teror
all year round, taking advantage of its
beautiful hiking trails. For lovers of nature
and tradition, Teror Town Hall has
developed an application called "Vamos
pa'l Pino" (We’re off to El Pino), an
essential tool for those who wish to explore
the paths that lead to Teror. More
than twenty routes are signposted in
this application, providing detailed information
about each trail and facilitating
the planning of the visit.
We have selected three trails - out of
the 20-plus available - because we
think they tell stories that need to be
discovered:
Popular Trail: From Piletas to the Basilica
of Teror, these 10.7 km not only
make up a route, but constitute a journey
through the history and legends of
Gran Canaria. Each step has a connection
with the past, through the people
who, centuries ago, walked these
paths, leaving their mark on the land
and legends.
Arucas Trail: Starting out from the
Church of San Juan Bautista in Arucas,
this route is not only a physical journey
but an architectural journey too,
through the neo-Gothic style and an
encounter with the Canary economy
and culture in the form of the banana
fields. Ruins such as the Acueducto de
los Arcos will accompany you with silent
stories until you reach the majesty
of the Basilica of Our Lady of El Pino.
Santa Brígida Trail: From the parish
church of Santa Brígida to the Basílica
of Our Lady of El Pino, this route
reveals captivating landscapes and
sacred places in natural surroundings.
From the Alonso ravine to the Caldera
de Pino Santo, every step provides an
opportunity to discover the biodiversity
and natural beauty so typical of Teror.
