The piñuela, a plant known<br />

as Bromelia pinguin, known<br />

In Mayan as ch’om or ch’am<br />

with bittersweet pulp that<br />

contains crystals of calcium<br />

oxalate in the form of tiny<br />

needles. The fruit is<br />

consumed naturally, although<br />

in some places it is<br />

customary to give it a slight<br />

baking.<br />

La piñuela, una planta poco<br />

conocida Bromelia pinguin,<br />

que en maya se le conoce<br />

como ch’om o ch’am con<br />

pulpa agridulce que contiene<br />

cristales de oxalato de calcio<br />

en forma de pequeñísimas<br />

agujas. El fruto se consume<br />

al natural, aunque en algunos<br />

lugares se acostumbra darle<br />

un ligero cuece.<br />

Tamarillo, or tree tomato,<br />

in Latin Solanum betaceum,<br />

varies in color from yellow<br />

and orange to red and<br />

almost purple. The flesh of<br />

the tamarillo is tangy and<br />

pleasantly sweet. The fruits<br />

are very high in vitamins<br />

and iron.<br />

naranja a rojo y casi púrpura.<br />

La carne del tamarillo es<br />

picante y agradablemente<br />
