The word comes from popote de chambray,<br />
this is how sacaton grass is called near Puebla<br />
and <strong>Mexico</strong> City. Straw paintings, a precolombian<br />
tradition, are made by shaping<br />
straw mostly into images of local landscapes.<br />
In the 40s a special workshop was opened to<br />
learn popotillo art and a group of awardwinning<br />
artists created a special studio called<br />
“Popotillo y Color” in <strong>Mexico</strong> City.<br />
The straw could be pre-cut down to workable<br />
sizes or broken during the process, the artist<br />
then presses the straw into the beeswax.<br />
La palabra viene del popote de chambray, así es<br />
como llaman a la hierba sacaton cerca de Puebla<br />
y la Ciudad de México. Los dibujos de popotillo,<br />
una tradición pre-colombina, son los paisajes<br />
locales.<br />
En los años 40s se inauguraron talleres<br />
especiales para aprender el arte de popotillo y<br />
un grupo de artistas premiados, inició un curso<br />
especial llamado “Popotillo y Color” en la Ciudad<br />
de México.<br />
La hierba se puede cortar previamente en<br />
tamaños manejables o romper durante el<br />
proceso, el artista luego lo presiona en la cera<br />
de abejas.<br />
The grass is first hand-dyed, later a thick paper<br />
or board is covered by a fine layer of “cera<br />
de Campeche,” a special mix of beeswax and<br />
natural resin.<br />
La hierba primero es teñida a mano, luego un<br />
papel grueso o tablero es cubierto por una fina<br />
capa de “cera de Campeche”, una mezcla<br />
especial de cera de abejas y resina natural.<br />
