Popotillo Art Jesus Garcia of Cholula is one of the few artists who are still making straw paintings from scratch in front of the visitors, starting with a simple drawing on the board. He harvests and dyes the grass himself and has been doing it for many years, selling his work to tourists who visit the Cholula archeological site. The word comes from popote de chambray, this is how sacaton grass is called near Puebla and <strong>Mexico</strong> City. Straw paintings, a precolombian tradition, are made by shaping straw mostly into images of local landscapes. In the 40s a special workshop was opened to learn popotillo art and a group of awardwinning artists created a special studio called “Popotillo y Color” in <strong>Mexico</strong> City. The straw could be pre-cut down to workable sizes or broken during the process, the artist then presses the straw into the beeswax. La palabra viene del popote de chambray, así es como llaman a la hierba sacaton cerca de Puebla y la Ciudad de México. Los dibujos de popotillo, una tradición pre-colombina, son los paisajes locales. En los años 40s se inauguraron talleres especiales para aprender el arte de popotillo y un grupo de artistas premiados, inició un curso especial llamado “Popotillo y Color” en la Ciudad de México. La hierba se puede cortar previamente en tamaños manejables o romper durante el proceso, el artista luego lo presiona en la cera de abejas. The grass is first hand-dyed, later a thick paper or board is covered by a fine layer of “cera de Campeche,” a special mix of beeswax and natural resin.
