e begin this leisurely tour in the
northern Italian city of Milan, where we will
see both the modern and historic sites.
From Milan we move to the Riviera di
Levante, a rugged coastline with many small
bays and inlets. This area is very
picturesque, with hills sloping dramatically
down to the sea. We will stay 4 nights in this
region touring the major highlights. Our base
here will be Santa Margherita Ligure, a
picturesque town with a friendly ambiance
and palm-lined harbour. Nearby are the
Cinque Terre villages that date from the 12th
century - each village is different and all
have dramatic coastal scenery.
After touring in and around Ligure we move
on to Montecatini for an 8-night stay. This
elegant and historic spa town is set amid
green Tuscan hills and olive groves. It has
many "Liberty" style buildings (an Italian
equivalent to Art Deco), and many parks and
gardens. Its 11 spas offer a range of
treatments, or you can just drink the
therapeutic mineral waters. The town also
has many shops and restaurants and a
weekly market. Local trains and buses
operate a regular service to the surrounding
towns and villages. Touring in this region will
include Florence, the famous Tuscan hilltop
towns, elegant villas, farms and medieval
towns like Lucca. Our Montecatini hotel
offers lectures on local history, cooking
lessons and entertainment on some
evenings.
***Those participating in any of our tours to
Europe must be able to walk fairly long
distances and climb stairs easily.
