Veolia Water is also looking at new
opportunities, such as the control of
rainwater runoff in increasingly dense,
pavemented urban areas, which require
new ways of managing water in cities.
Strengthened market positions
in Europe
In France, the many contracts that
were renewed integrated recent
technical innovations in environmental
protection. This was the case, for
example, for the contract to operate
water, wastewater and stormwater
services in Mâcon and for the water
services contracts for Beauvais and the
Nice-Côte d’Azur joint district authority.
The division consolidated its market
positions in Europe, especially in Ireland,
where the city of Limerick awarded it
the contract to upgrade and operate
the Clareville water production plant.
In the United Kingdom, where it serves
3 million customers in southeast
England, Veolia Water acquired several
of Thames Water’s non-regulated
businesses. It is also upgrading the Shell
Green wastewater sludge incineration
center in Widnes. In Eastern Europe,
business was strengthened with two
new contracts in the Czech Republic,
where Veolia Water now serves
more than 40% of the population.
Important breakthroughs in the
United States
Already present in water service in
Indianapolis, Veolia Water was awarded
a 10-year management contract for
wastewater service in the Milwaukee
District (1.1 million inhabitants in
28 municipalities). The division will operate
the main sewers, the pumping stations
and the network of retention tunnels that
control overfl ows during wet weather. It
will also manage the plant that produces
fertilizer by drying the wastewater sludge.
In 2007, Veolia Water also won the designbuild-operate
contract for the extension of
Tampa Bay Water’s regional surface water
treatment plant. The division also holds
the biggest partnership contracts to be
concluded in these fi elds in the United
States, where there is very high demand
for technological solutions and new
infrastructure.
Municipal and industrial contracts
in Asia
In Asia, Veolia Water is shoring up its
leadership position in water. In China,
following in the wake of the Lanzhou and
Haikou contracts and the major Shenzhen
extension, the division signed its 25th
municipal contract, this time covering the
29 million residents of Tianjin. In Japan,
it concluded its three fi rst public service
management contracts in that country
with Chiba, Hiroshima and Saitama.
The management model favored
by public authorities is now spreading
to the industrial sector and bolstering
the division’s expansion. In China,
Tianjin Soda and PTTPE awarded it the
construction and operation of their
treatment plants, and Quingdao
Soda awarded it the operation of its
demineralization unit.
World-recognized expertise
in seawater desalination
The division selected the MED (1) thermal
process for the Jubail plant in Saudi
Arabia (800,000 cu.m/day of desalinated
water) and the reverse osmosis process
for the plants it will build and operate
in Campo de Dalias (Spain), Sydney
(Australia) and Sur (Oman). In Fujairah
(UAE), it has chosen to implement
its exclusive hybrid desalination
solutions, which combines the MED
thermal process and the reverse osmosis
process (590,000 cu.m/day).

The Braunschweig wastewater plant digests sludge and food fats to produce biogas that is sent to a cogeneration plant,
which uses the biogas from Braunschweig and other facilities to supply heat to a thousand households and electricity to
4,000. The digested sludge and treated wastewater are also recovered: it is sprayed on surrounding fi elds to water and fertilize
them. Shortly, some of the corn and rye grown in the fi elds will be used in an anaerobic digester to obtain additional biogas.
