Waste Management
Veolia Environmental Services underwent strong growth
of 23.5% in 2007. With operations in 35 countries,
the division expanded its geographic footprint.
It also broadened its range of expertise, especially
in Europe, its domestic market.

Benchmark in waste
management
Veolia Environmental Services operates
all around the world in the management
of liquid and solid, non-hazardous
and hazardous wastes (with the
exception of nuclear waste). Its services
range from waste collection and
transfer to recovery and recycling
on behalf of companies and public
authorities. The division also provides
cleaning services: pipe systems
maintenance, street cleaning, industrial
cleaning, equipment and production
tool maintenance, and soil remediation.
Its waste treatment methods include
various recovery methods: materials
recovery and recycling, agricultural
recovery and energy recovery.

Saving materials and energy resources
The growing awareness that energy
resources and primary raw materials are
fi nite is validating Veolia Environmental
Services’ strategy of continuously upping
its investment in waste-to-energy and
materials recovery.
As concerns recycling, the division
strengthened its positions in paper and
plastic through the acquisition of Sulo,
the German No. 2 in waste
management, which also operates in the
Baltic States and Eastern Europe. The
division expanded in scrap metal
recovery by acquiring Bartin Recycling
Group, the French No. 3 in the sector,
which raised its metal recycling capacity
to over 1 million metric tons per year.
In the energy recovery sector, Veolia
Environmental Services consolidated its
capabilities, in particular through the
acquisition of TMT, the leading private
operator in the Italian thermal waste
treatment market.
In the United States, the division signed
its 11th contract for energy recovery
with Pinellas County, Florida. The wasteto-energy
plant that it will be operating
is the biggest in the country, with an
incineration capacity of 1 million metric
tons per year and electricity production
to supply 45,000 homes and premises.
Developing environmental services
for the marine world
Marine pollution needs to be prevented,
and at the same time regulations are
gaining in complexity. Veolia
Environmental Services is responding
by off ering more services to ship-owners,
oil and gas platform operators, port
authorities, and so on.
