where revenue increased nearly 10%, as well as in
its international markets, where it gained close to 15%.
After its major acquisitions of SNCM in France and
SuperShuttle in the United States, the division is focusing

Public transportation, a solution in the
interest of environmental balance
Growing environmental concerns
and the soaring price of oil have made
transportation a bigger issue in public
policy than ever before. Public
authorities and individuals are taking
another look at transportation practices,
particularly in cities, as well as personal
and community behavior.
Major international initiatives, such as
the UN conference on climate change
in Bali; national initiatives, such as the
Grenelle de l’Environnement process
in France; and regional initiatives, such
as California’s adoption of morestringent
standards for cars, have shown
the importance of transportation in
preserving the planet’s environmental
balance. Public transportation emits less
greenhouse gas, pollutes less, frees up
public space and is economically
equitable, making
it the inevitable solution for sustainable
mobility.

To facilitate mobility and protect the
environment, Veolia Transport applies
its expertise in all transport modes
in many countries, in particular, its
expertise in dedicated-lane systems
such as light rail and bus rapid transit.
The division develops solutions to
organize intermodality. It coordinates
the diff erent transit modes, increases
ridership, is developing transportation
on demand, promotes alternative modes
and makes life simpler for passengers.
The company is focusing its expertise
on increasing its use of biofuels, which
by 2020 should account for 10% of its
fuel consumption in Europe.
Through its Veolia Cargo subsidiary,
it off ers European fi rms competitive rail
freight transportation solutions that
will meet the European Union’s target
for 2020 of reducing greenhouse gas
emissions 20% from their 1990 level.
