BUSINESS ACTIVITIES Transportation Veolia Transport saw a year of strong growth in France, where revenue increased nearly 10%, as well as in its international markets, where it gained close to 15%. After its major acquisitions of SNCM in France and SuperShuttle in the United States, the division is focusing on consolidating its positions. The division employs information and assistance services to help passengers organize their trips. For industrial companies in Europe, Veolia Transport off ers rail freight services with related logistics. Veolia Transport works with its clients to combat air pollution, integrate transit into urban planning, improve their systems’ accessibility and enhance safety. Its sights are set on inventing the mobility of today and of the future so that it can assist in and prepare for its clients’ growth. 66 2007 ANNUAL REPORT VEOLIA ENVIRONNEMENT Public transportation, a solution in the interest of environmental balance Growing environmental concerns and the soaring price of oil have made transportation a bigger issue in public policy than ever before. Public authorities and individuals are taking another look at transportation practices, particularly in cities, as well as personal and community behavior. Major international initiatives, such as the UN conference on climate change in Bali; national initiatives, such as the Grenelle de l’Environnement process in France; and regional initiatives, such as California’s adoption of morestringent standards for cars, have shown the importance of transportation in preserving the planet’s environmental balance. Public transportation emits less greenhouse gas, pollutes less, frees up public space and is economically equitable, making it the inevitable solution for sustainable mobility. Sustainable mobility, Veolia Transport’s core business To facilitate mobility and protect the environment, Veolia Transport applies its expertise in all transport modes in many countries, in particular, its expertise in dedicated-lane systems such as light rail and bus rapid transit. The division develops solutions to organize intermodality. It coordinates the diff erent transit modes, increases ridership, is developing transportation on demand, promotes alternative modes and makes life simpler for passengers. The company is focusing its expertise on increasing its use of biofuels, which by 2020 should account for 10% of its fuel consumption in Europe. Through its Veolia Cargo subsidiary, it off ers European fi rms competitive rail freight transportation solutions that will meet the European Union’s target for 2020 of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 20% from their 1990 level.
Winner in Las Vegas In 10 years NordWestBahn has become the leading private operator of regional passenger trains in Germany. It carries more than 21 million people per year on a network of 1,065 km of track. Its 100 rail cars travel 12.8 million km annually, and the company employs 440 people. In Las Vegas, Citizens Area Transit’s bus rapid transit system Max and its Deuce, which serves the Las Vegas Strip, are run by the same operator, Veolia Transportation. A team of 1,200 employees has been running 48 routes and 350 vehicles since 1993 for the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada. Rated one of the top 10 in the United States, the system has received numerous prizes from the American Public Transportation Association for its service and safety. In fi fteen years, ridership has increased from 15 million to 60 million a year. At the end of 2007, RTC decided to increase ridership on its routes without adding any vehicles. The program calls for changes in the routes and stops, increased frequency, the introduction of double-decker buses, training for all drivers, supervisors and radio operators,and information campaigns. For this new challenge, RTC again turned to Veolia Transportation. 67
