Jacques Barrot,
Vice President of the
European Commission,
Transport Commissioner
“To ensure that mobility – which
is a value and essential lever
in competitiveness – becomes
sustainable in a context of increasing
international trade […] there are
three requirements. First, the most
appropriate transportation modes
must be chosen. […] Rail, river and
maritime modes will replace trucking
for moving goods over long distances.
[…] Second, road transportation has
to become green. […] The European
Union must pave the way for a
planned and managed rollout of
biofuel through dialgoue with the
stakeholders in this fi eld. […]
Our third imperative is to organize
more-intelligent transportation
by combining new communications
technology and satellite navigation.
[…] Urban mobility will gain
enormously from the real-time
information revolution. […] Reliable
information on a city’s traffi c fl ow
must go hand in hand with the
growth in comfortable, dependable
public transportation organized
around all of the other means
of mobility.”
