II. WILLIAM, at King's College in 1645, and M.A. 1649, is designed<br />

" Master William " in his father's will.<br />

III. JAMES, in the proceedings in a <strong>family</strong> lawsuit, is mentioned as alive<br />

in 1666 (Burnet v. Frascr, 7th February, 1673 ; Mor. 1347), and<br />

is probably the "James Burnet <strong>of</strong> Leyes" encountered by General<br />

Patrick Gordon, first in the train <strong>of</strong> the Waywode<br />

<strong>of</strong> Kiew in<br />

1659, and afterwards (in 1665), apparently in pecuniary straits.<br />

James Burnet <strong>of</strong> Leyes has most earnestly entreated me for the<br />

lend <strong>of</strong> five pound Sterling. I send a note to Mr. Peter Webster<br />

to deliver him the money" (Diary <strong>of</strong> General Patrick Gordon,<br />

PP- 30, 94)-<br />

I. MARGARET, married John Kennedy <strong>of</strong> Kermucks (Sasine, 22nd<br />

July, 1673, to Mr. Robert <strong>Burnett</strong> <strong>of</strong> Muchalls. Aberdeenshire<br />

Sasines).<br />

II. ELIZABETH, married, ist, Sir Robert Douglas <strong>of</strong> Tilliwhilly<br />

(Sasine to her, 3ist May, 1666. Aberdeenshire Sasines, and<br />

Burnet v. Fraser ut supra) ; 2ndly, Fullerton <strong>of</strong> Kinnaber.<br />

III. ANNE, married almost immediately after her father's death<br />

Andrew Cant, son <strong>of</strong> the famous Covenanting minister. <strong>The</strong><br />

younger Andrew was then minister <strong>of</strong> Liberton, embraced<br />

Episcopacy and became one <strong>of</strong> the clergy <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, and<br />

principal <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh University.<br />

IV. HELEN, unmarried at the time <strong>of</strong> her father's death. According<br />

to Douglas, Sir Thomas' youngest daughter married "Colonel<br />

Barron <strong>of</strong> Strachan."<br />

In June, 1648, Sir Thomas <strong>Burnett</strong>'s eldest son died, leaving his three<br />

sons and two daughters (already enumerated) under his guardianship.<br />

In 1651 and 1652 Sir Thomas employed himself much in settling the<br />

affairs <strong>of</strong> his <strong>family</strong>, making provisions to the extent <strong>of</strong> 10,000 marks for<br />

the sons and unmarried daughters <strong>of</strong> his second marriage, secured to<br />

them after the fashion <strong>of</strong> the time by leases <strong>of</strong> lands, which he held in<br />

wadsct ; and entering all these writs verbatim in a "private register"<br />

kept by him in his own handwriting. In December, 1652, a year before
