Aberdeenshire polled cattle. He held the post <strong>of</strong> Lord Lieutenant <strong>of</strong><br />

Kincardineshire from 1847 till his death. He died, unmarried, i6th<br />

February, 1 849, and was succeeded by his brother.<br />

SIR ALEXANDER BURNETT OF LEYS, 9th BARONET (1849-56).<br />

Born 1 7th December, 1789. In the H.E.I.C. Service. Died, unmarried,<br />

20th March, 1856.<br />

XXII.<br />

SIR JAMES HORN BURNETT OF LEYS, loth BARONET (1856-76).<br />

<strong>The</strong> youngest son <strong>of</strong> Sir Robert <strong>Burnett</strong>, 7th Baronet. He was born<br />

22nd June, 1801, admitted a member <strong>of</strong> the Society <strong>of</strong> Writers to the<br />

Signet, 9th July, 1824, and succeeded his brother, Sir Alexander, 2Oth<br />

March, 1856. He held the post <strong>of</strong> Lord Lieutenant <strong>of</strong> Kincardineshire<br />

from December, 1863, till his death, I7th December, 1876. He married<br />

(ist), 3rd February, 1831, Caroline Margaret, daughter<br />

Spearman <strong>of</strong> Thornley Hall, Co. Durham, by whom he had :<br />

I. ROBERT, nth Baronet.<br />

<strong>of</strong> Charles<br />

II. CHARLES SPEARMAN, born 6th July, 1835 ; died 2ist June, 1836.<br />

He married (2nd), on the I2th July, 1837, his cousin-german, Lauderdale<br />

(who died 4th November, 1888), youngest daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander<br />

Ramsay <strong>of</strong> Balmain, and widow <strong>of</strong> David Duncan, Esq., <strong>of</strong> Rosemount,<br />

Co. Forfar, by whom he had :<br />

I. THOMAS, I2th Baronet<br />

II. ALEXANDER EDWIN, born I7th December, 1842; died 8th August,<br />

1897. Member <strong>of</strong> the Society <strong>of</strong> Writers to the Signet.<br />

I. ELIZABETH BANNERMAN, married, 2nd February, 1869, George<br />

John Pitt Taylor, 78th Highlanders, and has one son and three<br />

daughters. She died 22nd February, 1877.<br />

Sir James died I7th September, 1876.
