Good Mr. Rob. Burnet, Crimond, was removed by death ;<br />

are taken away and perishing, none considering or laying it to hart, that<br />

away from the euel to come.'<br />

Lord Crimond's will is curious and characteristic, and abounds in<br />

praise <strong>of</strong> his wife, and good advice to his sons. He leaves his books to<br />

be divided amongst his three sons, and his widow, who is to have one-<br />

third <strong>of</strong> his moveables, is left tutrix to his sons.<br />

He married, in 1620, Beatrix (who died in 1622), youngest daughter<br />

and co-heir <strong>of</strong> William Maule <strong>of</strong> Glaster, son <strong>of</strong> Robert Maule <strong>of</strong> Pan-<br />

mure, and had by her one daughter, Bethia (born 1622, died 1624).<br />

Lord Crimond married, 2ndly, Rachel, daughter <strong>of</strong> James Johnston,<br />

merchant in Edinburgh (by Elizabeth, daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir Thomas Craig,<br />

the distinguished jurist), and sister <strong>of</strong> Sir Archibald Johnston, Lord<br />

Warristoun, and had by her five sons and three daughters<br />

I. ALEXANDER, born 1629 ; died young.<br />

II. ROBERT, born 1630. Admitted to the Scottish bar, 1656; died,<br />

unmarried, 1662.<br />

III. JAMES, born 1635 ; died young.<br />

IV. (Sir) THOMAS, born 1638. Physician successively to Charles II.,<br />

James II., William III., and Anne. Was author <strong>of</strong> various<br />

medical works <strong>of</strong> repute in<br />

"<br />

their day, particularly Hippocrates<br />

Contractus," and "<strong>The</strong>saurus Medicinae Practicae Breviarium."<br />

He married, in 1662, Janet, daughter <strong>of</strong> Robert Bruce <strong>of</strong> Blairhill,<br />

and sister <strong>of</strong> the Countess <strong>of</strong> Kincardine, and had a son, Gilbert,<br />

an advocate, and one <strong>of</strong> the Commissioners <strong>of</strong> Excise, who<br />

married a daughter <strong>of</strong> Sir William Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Preston, and<br />

had a daughter, Anna the only child that survived him<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pitcur. Of Sir Thomas'<br />

married to James Halyburton<br />

daughters, one, Helen, was married (ist) to William Crawford,<br />

younger <strong>of</strong> Auchinarnes, and (2nd) to Ralph Dundas <strong>of</strong> Manor<br />

(<strong>with</strong> numerous descendants). <strong>The</strong> other, Euphemia, married<br />

James Robertson, advocate, and P. C. S. (one <strong>of</strong> the Bedlay<br />

<strong>family</strong>), <strong>with</strong> issue a daughter Janet, who became Countess <strong>of</strong><br />

Kincardine, and from whom the Elgin <strong>family</strong> are descended.
