V. EDWARD BANNERMAN, LL.D., in holy orders, dean <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh,<br />

born 3Oth January, 1793, married, in 1829, Isabella, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Rupert Cochrane <strong>of</strong> Halifax, Nova Scotia, who died 23rd July,<br />

1858. He died s.p. 27th December, 1872. Edward was educated<br />

at Durham School and Cambridge University, and was ordained<br />

in 1816. After serving as curate at Rodden and Buckland in<br />

Somersetshire, he removed to Edinburgh, where he spent the<br />

rest <strong>of</strong> his life. His first appointment there was as curate to the<br />

Rev. R. Q. Shannon, St. George's, York Place, where he remained<br />

for five and a-half years ; then he became incumbent for one<br />

year <strong>of</strong> the curious old church, St. Paul's, Carrubbers Close, now<br />

replaced by a new and handsome edifice, and finally settled down<br />

in 1827 at St. John the Evangelist, Princes Street, first as curate<br />

to Bishop Sandford, and afterwards as incumbent, being also<br />

made Dean <strong>of</strong> the Diocese in 1846. Dean Ramsay was a man<br />

<strong>of</strong> considerable accomplishments ; he wrote <strong>with</strong> great facility<br />

and excellent style ; was an admirable reader and elocutionist ;<br />

an ardent florist in his youth, and to the very last an enthusiastic<br />

as well as a highly cultivated musician. He possessed great<br />

skill as a flautist, sang well, and understood perfectly the con-<br />

struction and mechanism <strong>of</strong> the organ, while as an authority on<br />

all matters connected <strong>with</strong> the works <strong>of</strong> Handel he was con-<br />

sidered hardly second to any man <strong>of</strong> his day. His lectures<br />

on that composer, whose genius he admired beyond measure,<br />

delivered to the members <strong>of</strong> the Edinburgh Philosophical
