HELPFUL TERMS<br />

Collaboration When adults or children work together as a team to solve problems and accomplish<br />

tasks that cannot be achieved alone.<br />

Community- Encouraging children to understand the needs <strong>of</strong> the group as well<br />

Building as their own; fostering attitudes <strong>of</strong> caring and responsibility.<br />

Conflict Describes situations where one person or group has needs, desires or goals that<br />

interfere with the accomplishment <strong>of</strong> those <strong>of</strong> another person or group.<br />

Discipline Providing instruction and guidance for behavior, interactions and relationships with<br />

others.<br />

Dispositions Attitudes and ways <strong>of</strong> responding, such as persisting, taking risks and attending.<br />

Intervention Guidance given by an adult when a child is behaving inappropriately.<br />

Self-Concept/ The total collection <strong>of</strong> thoughts and feelings that an individual has<br />

Self-Esteem at any point in time about who he or she is.<br />

Self-Control The ability to regulate one’s behavior and relationships with others during conflicts<br />

or problem solving.<br />

Social Competence The ability to initiate and maintain satisfying, reciprocal relationships with peers.<br />

Social An understanding <strong>of</strong> the symbols and behaviors common to the<br />

Knowledge society in which you live, such as the names <strong>of</strong> numerals and saying please or thank<br />

you.<br />

Temperament A person’s way <strong>of</strong> responding to the environment, such as activity level, irritability,<br />

fearfulness and sociability.<br />
