Teenage Pregnancy<br />

Teenage pregnancy <strong>in</strong>cludes live births, stillbirths, abortions and ectopic pregnancies of women under<br />

<strong>the</strong> age of twenty. In this report, rates of teenage pregnancy are calculated for females aged 15–19 over<br />

1984/85–2007/08. Age is calculated as of date of admission to hospital <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> numerator and December<br />

31 of each fiscal year <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> denom<strong>in</strong>ator. Teenage pregnancy is def<strong>in</strong>ed as one hospitalization with one<br />

of diagnosis codes: V27 (live birth), 632 (missed abortion), 633 (ectopic pregnancy), 634 (spontaneous<br />

abortion), 635 (legally <strong>in</strong>duced abortion), 636 (illegally <strong>in</strong>duced abortion), 637 (unspecified abortion) or<br />

656.4 (<strong>in</strong>trauter<strong>in</strong>e death), or with one of procedure codes: 66.62 (salp<strong>in</strong>gectomy with removal of tubal<br />

pregnancy), 69.01 (dilation and curettage for term<strong>in</strong>ation of pregnancy), 69.51 (aspiration curettage of<br />

uterus for term<strong>in</strong>ation of pregnancy), 74.3 (removal of extratubal ectopic pregnancy),74.91 (hysterotomy<br />

to term<strong>in</strong>ate pregnancy) or 75.0 (<strong>in</strong>tra–amniotic <strong>in</strong>jection for abortion). Note that abortions performed<br />
