other in hybrids. Mendel had coined the terms dominating for those traits
that were passed on to the hybrid unchanged, and recessive for those that receded
or completely disappeared, while De Vries had called them active and
latent. What was perhaps most striking of all, and must have given De Vries
many sleepless nights, was that Mendel had demonstrated the 3-to-1 ratio
of dominants to recessives among the progeny of hybrids exactly as De
Vries had predicted in his 1:2:1 law of pangenes.
