or completely disappeared, while De Vries had called <strong>the</strong>m active and<br />

latent. What was perhaps most striking <strong>of</strong> all, and must have given De Vries<br />

many sleepless nights, was that Mendel had demonstrated <strong>the</strong> 3-to-1 ratio<br />

<strong>of</strong> dominants to recessives among <strong>the</strong> progeny <strong>of</strong> hybrids exactly as De<br />

Vries had predicted in his 1:2:1 law <strong>of</strong> pangenes.
