hearts. "There was one Body, one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one
Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, Who is above all, and through all, and in
you all" (Ephesians 4:6).
Following this same theme, Jesus prayed, "That they may be one" (John 17:21). While he
prayed for unity among Christians, which is a heart attitude of accepting one another as Christ
accepted them, this unity does not mean union. Union means all believers must join the same
denomination and do things the same way. Union is everyone doing the same thing, in the same
way, at the same time, because we have to.
The secret of our unity is, "I in them and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in
one;" (John 7:17). Because Christ is in us, He is a common object of our love and worship. We
are one in Christ. That does not mean we unite in relationship to do or give the same identical
worship expression. Since Christ is in us, and Christ is in the other person, we both come to the
worship experience with a unity of love, commitment and desire to magnify God. 16. Even
though some have different expressions of worship from us, we are not obligated to follow
someone else's methods of worship. A method of worship, like all methods used in the church; is
defined as, "The application of principle to culture." By this definition, our methods will change,
because culture changes from age to age. This does not mean we change our doctrine, nor does it
mean we change our principles. It means that we take eternal truth, which is our doctrine; and
we apply the Word of God to minister to people where they are (in culture), so that they may
worship God effectively.
Methods are many,
Principles are few.
Methods may change,
But principles never do.
Selected
This means that the content of our doctrine is not negotiable. As you read this book I am
not asking anyone to change their doctrine. Also, principles are eternal. The principle of
praying, teaching, evangelism and holiness cannot change. But what changes? Our methods
change with time, and our methods change in culture.
