PREFACE
I wrote this book immediately after delivering the Lyman Stewart Lectures at Talbot
Theological Seminary, LaMirada, California, October 24-26, 1995, on the topic "New Paradigms
in Church Worship, Evangelism and Education. There was intense interest by the student body,
so much so that hundreds of the undergraduates of Biola University (same campus) were present
in the auditorium. Young people knew there is tension between the contemporary worship
expressions that they prefer and the traditional worship of their parents.
In the summer of 1995 I attended the Missouri Lutheran Conference in Orlando, Florida,
and spoke on the Changing Paradigms of Church Worship, sponsored by the Lutheran Church,
Missouri Synod. I was asked whether the new seeker sensitive worship expressions emerging in
some Missouri Lutheran churches was biblical.
When I said the new seeker worship services expressed biblical principles, I encouraged
the young minister using this new worship format, but some older ones were not pleased with my
opinion. Then I said the older Lutheran liturgy expressed biblical principles, making the older
ministers happy.
I pointed out the new seeker services could be superficial and frothy, hence becoming
unbiblical. Also, the old Lutheran liturgy could be dead and meaningless, also becoming
unbiblical.
The essence of my addresses at Talbot Theological Seminary and to the Missouri
Lutheran ministers is in this book.
While the thoughts of this book have been developing for twenty years; I am grateful to
Broadman/Holman for giving me an opportunity to put them into printed expression for others to
examine.
I want to thank my secretary Linda Elliott for typing and proofreading the manuscript.
My friend and long-time research assistant Dr. Doug Porter helped gather data for this volume.
His commitment to the health and growth of the church has been an inspiration to me. This book
is the product of many who have influenced my thinking and contributed to my ministry. I give
credit to so many who have influenced my life. But in the final analysis, I bear responsibility for
all of the omissions and weaknesses. May God overlook them and use this book to produce
effective churches with worshipping members who weekly touch God, and God touches them.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
