3. Recognize the strengths of the church where you found Christ, and what that
church has done to formulate your basis view towards Christianity. Almost everyone remembers
the church and the worship service where they found Christ. Also the place where they were
grounded in their faith will always have an enduring influence in their perspective. Since you
can't re-write history and you can't undo experiences, you have to grow according to the roots
that have been planted in the soil. Therefore, know yourself, know your background, and
worship the way you have to worship.
4. Know your spiritual gifts and worship from strength. Part of worshipping
properly is to properly know your spiritual gifts. Because many churches represent a colony of
spiritual giftedness, you ought to know both your dominant spiritual gift and the dominant gift in
the church where you are attending. This will help you maximize your strengths to the church,
and it will help you understand what contribution the church will make to your maturity and
growth in grace.
5. Know the contribution of a church to you where its dominant spiritual gift is
different from yours. When God leads you to a church that has a worship expression that is
different from your expectation, you should not fight it, nor try to split the church, or even lead
people out of the church. If you have to remain in a church which has a worship expression that
is different from your expectations, try to learn what you can about the church and grow in grace.
Then, recognize how you can make your best contribution to that church. If it is an evangelistic
church and your gift is Bible teaching, don't agitate for sermons that are Bible teaching in
reflection. Try to determine how you can use your spiritual gift of teaching to strengthen the
church in which God has placed you.
