2. Sebomai/Sembazomai. The words sembomai and sembazomai are related terms and
convey the idea of revering with an emphasis on a feeling of awe or devotion often associated
with worship. This sense of awe or devotion is so strongly implied in these words that four times
in the New Testament the word sebomai is translated "devout" (Acts 13:43, 50; 17:4, 17).
The Use of Sebomai in the New Testament
Devotion to God: Matt. 15:9; Mark 7:7; Acts 16:14; 18:7, 13
Devotion to a goddess: Acts 19:27
The Use of Sembazomai in the New Testament
Devotion to a Creature: Rom. 1:25
3. Latreuo. The word latreuo means to serve or render religious service or homage.
Although this word is often translated "worship" in the New Testament, it is most often
translated "serve" and is related to latris which means a hired servant. This word tends to
emphasize worship as a service to God on the part of the worshipper.
