Worship is the exercise of the mind in the contemplation of God in which wonder and
awe play an important part in stretching and enlarging our vision, or in opening up our
conceptural forms to take in that which by its nature far outruns them.
T. F. Torrance
What is worship? Worship is to feel in your heart and express in some appropriate
manner a humbling but delightful sense of admiring awe and astonished wonder and
overpowering love in the presence of that most ancient Mystery, that Majesty which philosophers
call the First Cause, but which we call Our Father Which Art in Heaven.
A. W. Tozer
The worship of God is nowhere defined in Scripture. A consideration of the above verbs
shows that it is not confined to praise; broadly it may be regarded as the direct acknowledgement
of God, of His nature, attributes, ways and claims, whether by the outgoing of the heart in praise
and thanksgiving or by deed done in such acknowledgement.
W. E. Vine
The worship of God is not a rule of safety - it is an adventure of the spirit, a flight after
the unattainable.
Alfred North Whitehead
Worship is the believer's response of all that he is - mind, emotions, will, and body - to all
that God is and says and does. This response has its mystical side in subjective experience, and
its practical side in objective obedience to God's revealed truth. It is a loving response that is
balanced by the fear of the Lord, and it is a deepening response as the believer comes to know
God better.
