When introducing cell groups to your church, it is important to establish a receptiveness
to the idea. Some churches have quickly moved into a cell group ministry which quickly
degenerated into a cliques and factions. As a result, sometimes even the name "cell" is
accompanied by negative connotations which must be overcome. One pastor used the acronym
HOME groups which stood for Homes Open for Ministry and Evangelism. A church opposed to
cell groups was willing to embrace HOME groups. Dale Galloway, former pastor of New Hope
Community Church, Portland, Oregon, calls his cells TLC Cells, which stand for Tender Loving
Care Cells.
Christians need to be taught the value of cell groups before they are likely to become
involved. Many pastors have conditioned their church to be receptive to this approach to
ministry by teaching and preaching on the "one another" ministries identified in the New
Testament. The focus of such a preaching series is to demonstrate that intimate involvement in
the lives of fellow believers was part of the norm of New Testament Christianity. These types of
ministries can best be accomplished through cell group ministries.
