Argentina sends more
lemons to the East
In 2006, consignments of fresh fruit to
foreign markets totalled 270,880 pallets,
equivalent to some 312,000 tonnes,
17% down on exports for the previous
season (approximately 370,000
tonnes). According to data published
by SENASA (Argentina’s National Food
Safety and Quality Service), total citrus
fruit exports from Argentina (counting
the four main varieties: lemons, oranges,
mandarins and grapefruit) for the
2006 season registered a global fall of
8% compared to the previous year.
The global drop in lemons is due exclusively
to the considerably lower
demand from the European Union
(32% less than the previous year). In
terms of pallets, exports for 2006 finally
reached close on 170,000 units.
In contrast, the block of Eastern European
Countries (with Russia at the
head) represented 32% of this year’s
exports, perceptibly increasing its
share with respect to previous years
(20% on average).
As for export discrimination by countries,
Russia made an outstanding recovery
and regained first place in the
ranking (as regards volume) with a notable
increase reaching nearly 70,000
pallets (equivalent to some 80,000
tonnes. Spain, last year declared the
top-ranking country for 2005, registered
a decrease of 11% and dropped
to fifth position with 25,000 pallets,
i.e. some 28,000 tonnes. The performance
of the rest of the leading export
countries varied in comparison with
2005, depending on the block they
belong to: decline in volume in UEmember
countries (except the Netherlands)
and higher volumes in the East
European countries and Ukraine).
The Tucuman citrus sector proposes
the consolidation of existing export
markets and the promotion of those
considered more important due to
Ailimpo guarantees Verna lemons
until August
Ailimpo considers the Fino lemon
season to be finished and is concentrating
all efforts on harvesting and
marketing the Verna lemon variety.
The presence of Fino lemons on the
markets is already limited and has
been further harmed by the appearance
of quality problems caused by
the over-ripeness of the fruit, prompting
AILIMPO to focus on the Verna variety.
For this season, the production
of Verna lemons is forecast to exceed
300,000 tonnes, a figure much like
last season’s. The produce in ques-
placement possibilities. Accordingly,
throughout 2006, efforts to achieve
the re-opening of negotiations with
the United States fresh lemon market,
broken off in 2002, have continued.
Proper interaction between the Tucuman
Citrus Association and the official
bodies of the provincial and national
governments (Cancillería Argentina,
SAGPyA, SENASA, Ministerio de Desarrollo
Productivo de Tucumán, etc.),
raises hopes that soon (perhaps for
the 2008 season) it may be possible
to resume exports to the USA, which
would mean a considerable increase
in the export volume to date.
tion is of a high quality that will allow
the Spanish sector to compete with
lemons coming from Argentina, as
growers are able to guarantee supplies
to European customers up to the
month of August.
El limón argentino
con más envíos al este
Los envíos de fruta fresca a los mercados
externos en 2006 totalizaron
270.880 pallets, equivalentes a unas
312.000 toneladas, inferiores en un 17
% a lo exportado en la campaña anterior
(aproximadamente 370.000 toneladas).
Las exportaciones argentinas
de cítricos en su totalidad (sumando
las principales cuatro variedades: limón,
naranja, mandarina y pomelo)
para la Campaña 2006 registraron
una disminución global del 8 % comparándolas
con el año anterior, según
datos publicados por SENASA.
La disminución global del limón se
debe exclusivamente a la sensiblemente
menor demanda por parte de
la Unión Europea (un 32% menos a la
del año anterior). En términos de pallets
las exportaciones de 2006 finalmente
llegaron a casi 170.000 unidades.
Como contrapartida, el bloque de
los Países del Este Europeo (con Rusia
a la cabeza) ha representado este año
el 32% de las exportaciones, aumentando
sensiblemente su participación
respecto de años anteriores (20% en
promedio).
En cuanto a la discriminación de las
exportaciones por países, es de destacar
la recuperación del primer lugar
del ranking de Rusia (tomando referencia
los volúmenes) con un notable
aumento hasta casi 70.000 pallets
(equivalente a unas 80.000 Toneladas.
España, país que ocupaba el año
pasado el primer lugar del ránking
2005, registró una disminución de 11
puntos y pasó a ocupar la quinta posición
con 25.000 pallets, es decir, unas
28.000 Toneladas. El resto de los países
que forman parte de los primeros
lugares del ranking exportador han
tenido comportamientos dispares
respecto del año 2005, según al bloque
a que pertenezcan: disminución
de volúmenes los pertenecientes a
la Unión Europea (excepto Holanda) y
aumento de volúmenes los países integrantes
del Este Europeo Ucrania).
La propuesta del sector citrícola tucumano
es consolidar los mercados de
exportación ya existentes y avanzar
sobre aquellos que son considerados
de importancia por los volúmenes
que se podrían colocar. En este sentido,
durante todo el año 2006 se han
continuado las gestiones tendientes
a lograr la reapertura del mercado de
limones frescos de Estados Unidos,
interrumpidas en el año 2002. Una correcta
interacción entre la Asociación
Tucumana del Citrus y las entidades
oficiales de los gobiernos provincial y
nacional (Cancillería Argentina, SAGPyA,
SENASA, Ministerio de Desarrollo
Productivo de Tucumán, etc.), hacen
crear expectativas favorables para
que pronto (quizá para la Campaña
2008) se puedan reanudar las exportaciones
hacia el país americano, que
significarían importantes volúmenes
adicionales a los que hasta ahora se
están enviando hacia el exterior.
Ailimpo asegura el limón Verna
hasta agosto
Ailimpo da por concluida la campaña
de limón fino y dedica todos los
esfuerzos a la recolección y comercialización
del limón de la variedad
Verna.
