Solinda, Syngenta’s ‘wee
wonder’
Solinda, the mini-watermelon
launched in 2005, is not only a successful
variety, it has created a new
market segment and generated new
consumers. «Solinda could account
for up to 1/3 of watermelon sales without
eating into the market share of
the others», explained Laurent Peron.
The communications chief said that
a large-scale commercial trial shows
that SolindaTM is capable of generating
22% growth compared to stores
selling other same-segment watermelons.
Developed in partnership
with Anecoop in Spain and Peviani in
Italy, and grown in Morocco as well,
Solinda is showing strong growth in
Scandinavia and Britain and is also
sold in France. Last summer over 1
million French consumers bought this
variety.

Tomatoberry, a heart-shaped cherry
tomato. Being very sweet, it can also
recall a strawberry. In Japan, its taste
has positioned it in an upper segment
market with a big price mark-up: up to
3 times the price of a standard cherry
tomato!
Grandella from Western seeds
Grandella shall be distinguished for
its agronomic and fruit qualities: vigorous
plant, high yield potentials and
excellent growing behaviour with adverse
climatic conditions of both cold
and high temperatures. Its vine tomatoes
show very high sizes and colour.
Zeraim Gedera
With A Sense of Taste, Zeraim Gedera
is launching a new approach to these
varieties. Considering that the consumers’
expectations and needs are
turning towards products with taste
and sensory qualities, the company
called on an Israeli hip-hop group
to translate this process into dance.
«Each mouthful of fruit or vegetable
brings sensations that can be expressed
by the body», commented Tal
Frank, the marketing manager. Specifically,
this approach is materialised
by expanding the tomato range with
cherry, vine and other tomatoes from
a breeding programme based on both
flavour and colour, such as orange or
black varieties. Zeraim Gedera also
offers new capsicum varieties in different
shapes.

Tomatoes and peppers from Hazera España 90 SAU
For the coming 2007/08 season,
Hazera España 90 S.A.U. is launching
new tomato varieties in Cherry,
Daniela and Green types. In cherry tomatoes
the new varieties are Sanson,
Luciplus (plum cherry type), Felicity
and Vittoria (san marzano type), while
for the Daniela and Pink tomato type
market the firm is presenting Tya, V3

Hazera España tiene previsto lanzar
dos nuevas variedades en tomate,
tanto en la variedad Cherry, como
del tipo Daniela y Verdes. Además,
la empresa consolida su mercado en
pimientos California, con Vargas y
Giacomo, el primero para rojo, con L4
y Spotted, y el segundo amarillo, con
L4 y superproducción.
En tomates cherry presenta la variedad
Sanson, del tipo cherry tradicional,
con resistencia a Ty y prácticamente
ausencia de rotura, aún en las
condiciones más adversas de cultivo.
También comercializará Luciplus, un
tipo cherry-pera, con cuello blanco y
calibre algo superior a Lucinda, resistente
a V-F-1-2-Tmv-N-Pst. También
en cherry, Felicity presenta un calibre
algo superior a Shiren (35 mm y un

para este tipo de mercado lanzarán el
tomate Canario de tipo M (en rama o
suelto) de hombros blancos y resistencia
a Ty, que cuando forma ramas,
lo hace en forma de raspa pescado.
