Cereza del Jerte,
flavour with a label
The CRDOP Cereza del Jerte (Jerte
Cherries Designation of Origin Regulatory
Board) certifies the quality
and origin of this exclusive fruit with
numbered labels that also underline
the superior guaranteed quality of
authentic Jerte Picota cherries. Last
season, the output of cherries and
certified Picota cherries from the Jerte
valley amounted to 5,457Mt, of which
90% were Picotas. Although, in early
March 2007, it is still too soon to predict
the production volume, growers
are confident that crop volumes will
be similar to last year. The main foreign
markets importing Jerte cherries
are the UK and Germany, countries
where they have invested in promotion
campaigns, in collaboration with
the ICEX (Spanish Institute for Foreign
Trade) and the Junta de Extremadura
(Extremadura Regional Government).
This year, for the first time, a promotion
campaign is also being run in
Italy, where Jerte Picota cherries are
expected to obtain satisfactory results.
