Brazilian Association of Rock Art (ABAR)
A criação da Associação Brasileira de
Arte Rupestre-ABAR, foi uma iniciativa da
Dra. Mila Abreu, da Universidade de Trasos-Montes
e Alto Douro, por ocasião do
Congresso Internacional de Arte Rupestre-
IFRAO, associação que presidia na época
e que se celebrava em 1997, em Vila Real,
(Portugal). Constatando que o grupo mais
numeroso de assistentes por país, era o do
Brasil, ela nos fez a proposta de criar a nossa
associação. Reunidos os pesquisadores
presentes, fundamos a ABAR. A ABAR foi
registrada como associação científica sem
fins lucrativos no Cartório de Registros de
São Raimundo Nonato, PI.Depois de primeira
reunião celebrada no Brasil, em 2000, na sede
da Fundação Museu do Homem Americano,
em São Raimundo Nonato, PI, se decidiu
que as reuniões seguintes se realizariam,
também, no âmbito do Parque Nacional Serra
da Capivara, dado que esse parque reúne a
maior concentração de sítios com registros
rupestres pré-históricos do mundo, além
de ter sido declarado Patrimônio Mundial
da Humanidade pela UNESCO. A reunião
da ABAR celebrada em 2004, foi de cunho
internacional, dedicada, principalmente, aos
problemas de preservação da arte rupestre
nas áreas declaradas Patrimônio Mundial,
as estratégias de preservação e as novas
técnicas de levantamento e registro. Os
resultados das reuniões da ABAR têm sido
publicados na Revista FUMDHAMENTOS

The establishment of the Brazilian
Association of Rock Art-ABAR was an
initiative of Dr. Mila Abreu, of the University
Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Portugal,
during the International Congress of Rock
Art-IFRAO, in 1997, Vila Real, Portugal,
when she was president. Noticing that the
biggest group of researchers came from
Brazil, she suggested the creation of our own
association and consequently ABAR was
founded.ABAR was registered as scientific
non-profit organization at the Registry Office
of São Raimundo Nonato, PI.After the first
meeting in Brazil, in 2000, at the Museum of
American Man, in São Raimundo Nonato,
PI, it was determined that all other meetings
would be held here, at the Serra da Capivara
National Park, because here the world’s
major concentration of sites with prehistoric
rock registers has been found. The Park is
also listed as UNESCO World Heritage.The
international ABAR meeting of 2004 dealt
mainly with problems like the preservation
of rock art sites in areas declared world
heritage, the strategies of conservation
and new technologies with regard to
taking stock and registration.The results
of ABAR meetings have been published
in the journal FUMDHAMENTOS, edited
by the Foundation Museum of American
