Quality Management at Rock Art Sites: The HERITY Certification at Serra da Capivara World

Serra da Capivara Park is one of the most powerfull sites of Rock Art in the World. The inscription in
the UNESCO World Heritage List witnesses its interest at a global level. Moreover it presents very
interesting management strategies. Nonetheless, the large scale of the Park, the number of its sites,
social and cultural implications, logistic, and others make it a very difficult site to be assessed.
These characteristics implied that the HERITY Global Evaluation System, specific for Cultural Assets
and based on a strong public-oriented approach, was thought to be the right model to make possible to
maintain and strenghten quality management at this site, involving visitors and helping responsible people
to better manage the assets they are in charge, as well as to match UNESCO-WHC recommendations on
Management Plans setting. The possibility to measure performances, improvements, skills and results at
Serra da Capivara through time and the international vocation of the HGES are to be taken into account
too. Serra da Capivara as a Pilot Site in the context of a consolidated model will let to verify the usefulness
of the HERITY certification of Rock Art Sites open to the public at a World scale.
