A Fundação Museu do Homem Americano
(FUMDHAM) foi criada no ano de 1986
em São Raimundo Nonato, Estado do
Piauí. Trata-se de uma entidade científi ca,
fi lantrópica, uma sociedade civil, sem
fi ns lucrativos, declarada de utilidade
pública estadual e federal e cadastrada no
Conselho Nacional de Assistência Social.
Esta instituição foi criada pelos
pesquisadores de uma cooperação
científi ca bi-nacional (França-Brasil). Uma
equipe, inicialmente de arqueólogos,
trabalha na região desde 1970. A partir
de 1978, as pesquisas tornaram-se
interdisciplinares, criando-se o Projeto
Piauí, cujo tema de pesquisa foi definido
como “A interação Homem-Meio, da préhistória
aos dias atuais, no sudeste do
Piauí”.
Durante os últimos trinta anos esta equipe
científi ca estudou a região, constituindo um
importante acervo de conhecimentos sobre
a área.
Hoje, a FUMDHAM tem como finalidade
operacionalizar o retorno dos resultados
das pesquisas à sociedade, tanto no
plano cultural, ecológico, como no do
desenvolvimento sócio-econômico da Área
de Proteção Ambiental que circunda o
Parque Nacional da Serra da Capivara.
In 1986 the foundation “Museum of American
Man” (FUMDHAM) was created in
São Raimundo Nonato, Piauí state. It is a
non-profi t, scientifi c, philanthropic and civil
organization of public utility on federal and
regional level and registered with the National
Council for Social Assistance.
This institution was realized by scientists
of a bi-national research cooperation
(France-Brazil). A team, initially composed
of archaeologists, works in the region
since 1970. From 1978 on research
turned interdisciplinary and the project
Piauí, defi ned as ‘ the interaction of Man-
Environment, from prehistory to the present
times in the Southeast of Piauí ‘ was
launched.
During the last thirty years this scientifi c
team has studied the region and compiled
important data about the area.
Today the objective of FUMDHAM is to
transmit the results of research to society,
on the cultural and ecological level as
well as with regard to the socioeconomic
development of environmental protection of
the area surrounding the Serra da Capivara
National Park.
