WILL MEDI-CAL PAY MY PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCEPREMIUMS IF I CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO MAKE PAYMENTS?If you are a MEDI-CAL beneficiary and you have a very high-cost medicalcond<strong>it</strong>ion which requires a physician’s care, the DHCS may pay your privatehealth insurance premiums, if <strong>it</strong> is cost effective, under the Health InsurancePremium Payment (HIPP) program. There are specific requirements <strong>to</strong> qualify forthe program and not all applicants are approved for HIPP. For more informationon HIPP:• ask your county eligibil<strong>it</strong>y worker <strong>to</strong> refer you, or• call the DHCS’ HIPP Program at 1-866-298-8443(<strong>to</strong>ll-free).A HIPP representative in Sacramen<strong>to</strong> will explain the process and requirementsfor the program. If <strong>it</strong> appears that you may meet the eligibil<strong>it</strong>y requirements, anapplication will be sent <strong>to</strong> you.14. WILL I GET A MEDI-CAL IDENTIFICATION CARD?MEDI-CAL mails plastic Benef<strong>it</strong>s Identification Cards (BICs) <strong>to</strong> all beneficiaries.The 14 numbers and letters on your card identify you. <strong>You</strong>r health careproviders need your BIC <strong>to</strong> provide services and <strong>to</strong> bill MEDI-CAL. If you havean “Immediate Need” or get Confidential <strong>Medi</strong>cal Services (Minor Consent) asdescribed in Section 2D, your CWD will give you a paper MEDI-CAL card.NOTE: YOUR BIC DOES NOT GUARANTEE MEDI-CAL ELIGIBILITY. Take your BICor paper card <strong>to</strong> your doc<strong>to</strong>r, dentist, pharmacy, hosp<strong>it</strong>al or other medicalprovider. The provider will use this card <strong>to</strong> verify that you are eligible forMEDI-CAL.- 13 -
