MN people do not get a cash grant becausethey have <strong>to</strong>o much income or property or do not want a cash grant. <strong>You</strong>may become eligible for MEDI-CAL and get a <strong>Cal</strong>ifornia Benef<strong>it</strong>s IdentificationCard (BIC) by paying or promising <strong>to</strong> pay medical expenses which equal your“share of cost” (SOC) for the month. (See Sections 10 and 11.)C. MEDICALLY INDIGENT (MI): <strong>You</strong> are <strong>Medi</strong>cally Indigent if you are apregnant woman w<strong>it</strong>h no linkage (connection) <strong>to</strong> a PA program (<strong>Cal</strong>WORKs);a refugee in the country 8 months or less; or a person age 21 <strong>to</strong> 65 in a skillednursing facil<strong>it</strong>y or intermediate care facil<strong>it</strong>y. Persons under 21 years of age,including those in foster care whose needs are met fully or in part by publicfunds, children who qualify for the State-only Aid for Adoption AssistanceProgram and certain other children not living w<strong>it</strong>h a parent or relative mayalso be included in the MI group.D. SPECIAL PROGRAMS:• PREGNANT WOMENIf you are pregnant and cannot afford <strong>to</strong> pay for health care and somedental care, MEDI-CAL can help pay for medical expenses for you and yourunborn. Many times you can get MEDI-CAL at no cost <strong>to</strong> you, even if youhave income. Once you get MEDI-CAL, increases in your family’s incomewill not be counted:• during your pregnancy, and postpartum period,• for your baby’s first year of life.Participating perinatal providers throughout <strong>Cal</strong>ifornia can offer pregnantwomen immediate, temporary MEDI-CAL coverage pending the formalMEDI-CAL application under the Presumptive Eligibil<strong>it</strong>y program. If you arepregnant and interested in this service, ask if your provider participates inthis program.• CHILDREN<strong>You</strong>r child may get MEDI-CAL at no cost, if your child is an infant or,between ages 1 and 6, or between ages 6 and 18.• REFUGEESIf you are a refugee or entrant not qualified for the MN or MI programs, askyour county eligibil<strong>it</strong>y worker for refugee/entrant medical assistance.• NONCITIZEN VICTIMS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING ANDOTHER SERIOUS CRIMESIf you came <strong>to</strong> the Un<strong>it</strong>ed States as a victim of human trafficking or otherserious crime, ask your county worker about the Trafficking and CrimeVictims Assistance program (TCVAP).- -
