On one – a rectangle of sand with pot holes and no nets – the youth team of a Rwandan second-division side are playing a practice match with a speed and intensity that would frighten many a premier European club. On the other – a brand-new, all-weather pitch – 500 Rwandans stand in reverential silence as they watch their national team, Amavubi (The Wasps), train for the biggest match of their lives: the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Eritrea. In the centre circle stands Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic, barking orders at his players in heavily accented English. Sredojevic, a Serbian who has coached top African sides in Sudan and Ghana, and scouted in 50 of Africa’s 54 countries, has only got to know his players over the past few weeks, and has been charged with achieving something that Rwanda – for all its talents – has never before managed: to qualify for a World Cup. “Talent is talent, no matter in what country in the world,” he says, grabbing a breather at the side of the pitch. “I’m happy we have the talent, but that talent needs strong matches, strong challenges.” And there’s no greater challenge than the World Cup. Yet it’s wrong to say that no Rwandan has ever appeared at a World Cup finals.
