Fit for a princess
The majority of Burkinabé belong to
the Mossi ethnic group and owe their
existence to the feisty Princess
Yenenga, who founded the Mossi line
through her son Ouedraogo. Named
after her is the Princess Yenenga Lodge
(651 Avenue de la Grande Chancellerie,

com), one of Ouaga’s most stylish
places to stay. Architecture based on
traditional structures gives warmth to
classy rooms and an atmosphere of easy
luxury, while the restaurant is justly
famous in its own right.
Footie fever
Most African nations are football
mad, and Burkina Faso is no exception.
The national team is called Les Etalons
(The Stallions); their stadium is the
Stade du 4 Août in Gounghin, where you
may be lucky enough to catch an
international match or at least a local
club game. The junior team, Les Etalons
Cadets, are rising stars, and any chance
to see them should not be missed. Look
out for other club fixtures at the Stade
Municipal, near the Moro-Naba’s palace;

be sure to arrive early. Failing the real
thing, try your hand at le babyfoot (table
football) – you’ll find tables surrounded
by enthusiasts throughout the city.
Ouagadougou is the land of the moped, sometimes seven lanes thick and weaving amid donkey carts, four-wheel
drives and hawkers with goods on their heads. To get around the city, your best bets are to take a seat in a shared
green taxi (watch out for pick-pockets), hire a passing cab for yourself, or call STMB (tel: 5030 8990) for a clean, newish,
air-conditioned taxi delivered to your door. Taxis are metered, but fares rarely go above $5 (€4) for city hops.
La fièvre du foot
La plupart des nations africaines sont dingues de football, et
le Burkina n’est pas une exception. L’équipe nationale se
nomme Les Etalons ; leur stade est le Stade du 4 Août à
Gounghin, où vous aurez peut être la chance d’assister un jour
à un match international ou au moins, d’un club local. L’équipe
des juniors, Les Etalons Cadets, sont les étoiles montantes ;
surtout, ne ratez pas une opportunité de les voir. Vous pouvez
apprécier d’autres rencontres au Stade Municipal, près du
palace Moro-Naba ; mais assurez-vous d’arriver tôt. Si vous
avez tout raté, exercez-vous au babyfoot – vous trouverez des
tables occupées par des passionnés dans toute la ville.
Ouagadougou est le pays des vélomoteurs. Ils roulent parfois à 7 de front dans les rues en zigzaguant entre les carrioles
Y aller tirées par des ânes, les véhicules 4X4 et les colporteurs transportant des marchandises sur la tête. Pour vous déplacer
dans la ville, optez soit pour un taxi vert partagé (attention toutefois aux pickpockets), un taxi individuel que vous hélez dans la rue
ou un taxi de la STMB (tél. : 5030 8990) avec climatisation, qui vous amènera à bon port. Tous les taxis possèdent un compteur, mais le
prix moyen d’une course en ville dépasse rarement 5 $ (4 €).

een propere, behoorlijk nieuwe

voor uw deur komt oppikken.
De taxi’s gebruiken een meter,
maar de rekening loopt zelden
op tot meer dan $5 (€ 4) voor
ritjes in de stad.
