Modern masters
Modern Ivorian art has a new home
in Abidjan with a recently opened show
at La Rotonde des Arts Contemporains
(Avenue Chardy, Plateau, tel. 2021
9500). The free exhibition reviews the
country’s art from independence (1960)
to the present day, including works by
Cherif Souleymane, Koné Mamadou and
Michèle Kouadio, among others. In the
heart of the city’s bustling business
district, it’s a great place to pass an
hour or two in quiet contemplation.

If you’re looking for something to take
home, the recently reopened Amani
Galerie (corner of Rues du Docteur
Blanchard and Pierre et Marie Cure,
Zone 4, tel. 0701 1050) has one of the
city’s best collections of high-quality
African sculpture, furniture and art –
many created by Leon, the owner.

Abidjan Airport isn’t far (about 16km) from the city centre and metered orange taxis wait outside the exit. A ride to
Plateau, and most of the business hotels, costs between CFA 3,000 (€4.60) and CFA 6,000 (€9.15). You can negotiate
a fi xed rate or have the driver use his meter; rates double after midnight. The fi rst taxi in the queue will often wait for someone who
doesn’t know the rate, so move on down the line if you’re not being given a reasonable price.

La Rotonde des Arts
Contemporains (Avenue Chardy,
Plateau, tel. 2021 9500) opende
onlangs zijn deuren met een
gratis tentoonstelling van
Ivoriaanse kunst in Abidjan van
de onafhankelijkheid (1960) tot
op heden. Het kunstwalhalla
heeft werken van o.a. Cherif
Souleymane, Koné Mamadou en
Michèle Kouadio en ligt pal in het
zakencentrum. Een prima plek om
gezellig in rond te dwalen.
Kunstige koopwaar
Op zoek naar een artistiek
souvenir? De Amani Galeri
(kruispunt van de Rue du Docteur
Blanchard en de Rue Pierre et
Marie Curie, Zone 4) is recent
opnieuw open en heeft een
schitterende kunstcollectie met
o.a. beeldhouwwerken, meubilair
en kunstvoorwerpen. Heel wat
werken zijn handgemaakt door
Leon, de eigenaar.
Feestelijke fusion
Norima (Vallon/II Plateaux,
achter het Cash Center) serveert
andere kunst. Het nieuwe
Amerikaans-Ivoriaans restaurant
bereidt lekkernijen met
ongelofelijk veel passie. Smul
van culinaire geneugten als de
jambalaya, de Cajun krabkoekjes
of een broodje tilapia.
De luchthaven
Vervoer van Abidjan ligt
niet ver van het stadscentrum
(zo’n 16 km). Oranje taxi’s
met een meter staan klaar
aan de luchthaven. Een rit
naar Plateau, waar de meeste
zakenhotels liggen, kost CFA
3000 (€ 4,60) à 6000 (€ 9,15).
Spreek een vaste prijs af of
betaal de meter van de taxi.
Dubbel tarief na middernacht.
De eerste taxi in de rij wacht
vaak op iemand die de prijzen
niet kent, ga dus gewoon naar
de volgende taxi in de rij als u
geen aanvaardbare prijs krijgt.
