David Zanetta Un regard magnétisant, des yeux bleus perçants, la parole philosophe et l’esprit libre, David Zanetta détient le charisme de ceux qui séduisent et intriguent. Curieux et insatiable explorateur, il a parsemé sa jeunesse de voyages et de découvertes, décoré les scènes de théâtres du nord de l’Europe, avant de rencontrer son destin qui va l’emporter dans la vie : les montres. En véritable autodidacte et au gré des observations qu’il a effectuées sur celles-ci lorsqu’il était revendeur puis collectionneur, il a réussi à se constituer une culture horlogère unique, en vivant et apprivoisant ces objets qui lui ont, dès le début, « raconté quelque chose ». C’est en 2002 qu’il décide de fonder De Bethune avec Denis Flageollet et de donner une nouvelle dimension à cet artisanat dont les valeurs fondamentales s’édulcorent toujours plus. Conscient que l’endurance et la discipline sont les seuls accès à l’excellence, il voit symboliquement son entreprise comme un vecteur d’une meilleure humanité, ainsi qu’il l’explique : « Chacun donne sa contribution à l’évolution, c’est l’attitude de la connaissance et de la modestie, et ce, dans tous les domaines. L’histoire est un long discours dans lequel il y a plusieurs étapes qui nous permettent d’en comprendre et d’en synthétiser le sens ». Sans cesse en quête de perfection, il cherche à résoudre les démons séculaires de l’horlogerie, en alliant technicité et esthétisme dans une montre où frictions et poids seraient annihilés. Dur avec lui-même et avec les autres, il n’en a pas moins l’âme d’un rousseauiste, aimant profondément l’être humain et les fortes amitiés qu’il inspire, sans toutefois se fondre au coeur de la société. Préférant ses tracteurs, ses arbres et ses pierres à l’effervescence souvent corruptible de notre civilisation, il plonge ses profondes racines dans la terre et refuse de se laisser piéger par les rêves qu’il estime « présomptueux et illogiques, car les rêves ne sont là que pour servir nos rêves ». Extrémiste du détail, philosophe et ayant parfois « mauvais caractère » comme le disent ses amis, David Zanetta fait partie de ces personnes fortes et attachantes qui donnent toute sa saveur à la vie et toute son intensité au temps. If David Zanetta is De Bethune's philosophical soul, then Denis Flageollet provides the perfect, all-essential balance thanks to his innate, practical ability to tackle the core issues of everyday business. By a combination of destiny and sheer chance, Flageollet represents his family's fourth generation of watch-makers, after an earlier foray into the world of sailing. He found his true destiny in his passion for mechanics, and his lifelong fascination with tools, materials of every kind, and the great achievements of human invention. Flageollet trained at the Ecole de l’Horlogerie in Locle, before working as a technician in the village museum, restoring numerous pieces from its Renaissance collection. Talented, insatiably curious, with a huge appetite for knowledge, Flageollet met a host of leading industry personalities during this period, discovering the core values of an art that he has worked passionately to preserve and evolve ever since. Which is why, after ten years as the creator of a diverse array of watches for the top names in the industry, he chose to establish De Bethune, with David Zanetta. Seven years on, the duo are justifably proud of their symbiotic partnership, and the respect earned by their cherished brand. Flageollet is an energetic character who sleeps little and thinks a great deal, tireless in his single-minded pursuit of the perfect watch. De Bethune's all-inclusive top-down structure includes a research and development department dedicated to devising ever-more functional, user-fiendly products for the house's clientele. Denis Flageollet is a visionary watch designer, already thinking hard about the possibilities of new, personalised functions for tomorrow's watch users. An avowed admirer of Louis Cartier, Edmond Jaeger, Abraham-Louis Breguet and Adrien Philippe, he regrets the lack of mentors and guides in society today – people capable of ecnouraging us all to try harder, reach further, be better human beings. Denis Flageollet works with a surgeon's precision, excellence and humility, dedicating his life to the fine art of enhancing, and carrying forward our essential humanity. Entre déterminisme et hasard, il représente la quatrième génération d’horlogers au sein de sa famille. Il aurait, en effet, tout aussi bien pu être constructeur de bateau à voiles. Son véritable destin, c’est la mécanique. Depuis toujours, fasciné par les outils, les matériaux en tout genre et les grandes conquêtes humaines, il a choisi de se former à l’Ecole de l’Horlogerie du Locle avant d’exercer au Musée du même village, en tant que technicien, et de restaurer une grande quantité d’horloges de la Renaissance. Ouvert à la vie, curieux et doué, il se construit grâce à sa soif d’apprendre. Durant cette période de sa vie, il rencontre de nombreuses personnalités du métier qui lui inculquent les valeurs et la passion d’un art qu’il souhaite depuis, lui aussi, restaurer et faire évoluer. C’est pourquoi, après plus de dix ans de diverses créations horlogères pour des marques haut de gamme, il fonde De Bethune avec David Zanetta. Cela fait aujourd’hui sept ans qu’il se félicite chaque jour de cette symbiose et de ce respect qu’ils ont su instaurer et qu’ils entretiennent avec soin. Dormant peu et réfléchissant beaucoup, il poursuit sa quête de la montre parfaite, comme certains le Graal, sans relâche et mû par une motivation inébranlable. Entièrement verticalisée, la maison De Bethune a mis en place un département de recherche et développement, destiné à concevoir jour après jour un produit toujours plus confortable et fonctionnel pour le client. Visionnaire, Denis Flageollet pense déjà à la montre de demain, dont l’ambition serait d’offrir un nouvel usage à son utilisateur, en lui permettant d’en individualiser le réglage. David Zanetta is an undeniably seductive, charismatic, intriguing man, with a compelling gaze, piercing blue eyes, a philosopher's way with words, and an open mind. As a young man, this insatiably curious explorer travelled widely and worked as a theatre designer throughout northern Europe, before discovering his true destiny, in the world of fine watch-making. Zanetta is a self-taught watch expert: his extraordinary, unique connoisseurship is based on his own observations of the models he sold as a watch trader and, later, collected in his own right – specialist knowledge based on the experience of living with, and getting to know these endlessly fascinating objects, each of which, in his words, "has something to say." In 2002, Zanetta and his partner Denis Flageollet founded De Bethune with a mission to bring a new dimension to the core values and craftmanship of the industry – values which he felt had become increasingly "watered down". Recognising that perseverance and discipline are the keys to excellence, Zanetta created the business quite deliberately as a vector for the best qualities of human endeavour – watch-making for a better world: "Each of us contributes to evolution, in a spirit of knowledge-seeking and modesty, in every sphere. History is an continuous narrative marked by different epochs that allow us to understand it and synthesize its meaning." Zanetta's quest for perfection has him duelling with some of watch-making's age-old demons, combining technicity and aesthetics in machines designed to annihilate friction and reduce their own weight to the point of non-existence. Zanetta is hard on himself and others, but he's a networker at heart, with a deep love of humanity, the human capacity for friendship, and our ability to function as a society of disparate, distinctive individuals. That said, he's a son of the soil, too, preferring the tractors, trees and rocky landscapes of his home region to what he sees as the easily corrupted bustle of civilisation. With his feet firmly on the ground, he refuses to be trapped by what he calls "presumptious, illogical dreams. Dreams are there to serve our dreams, nothing more."
