Goal-line technology 133by means of vibration and a visual “GOAL”signal.System installationAfter the final confirmation of the GLTprovider in October 2013, work began oninstalling the system in the 12 FIFA WorldCup stadiums in Brazil, with cameras setup under the roof of each stadium and thenconnected to the hardware and softwarein the control room. Finally, the system wascalibrated to ensure that it was in line withthe different conditions in each stadium.GoalControl successfully completed theinstallation in the last two stadiums in mid-May, working in close cooperation with theLOC and the local stadium management.Final installation testsThe 12 installed systems then passed TheIFAB’s installation test, as part of whichmore than 2,400 GLT incidents had to becorrectly indicated in various situations andconditions. These tests were conducted by anindependent test institute, Labosport UK. FIFAcertified all 12 stadiums for 12 months onthe back of the positive test results.Referee trainingOn 7 June, FIFA held a referee trainingsession at the Maracanã to ensure that allmatch officials were comfortable with thetechnology and to explain the pre-matchprocedure in more detail. The generalfunctionality and accuracy of the system, andthe mandatory referee check in particular,were important parts of this training session.Media eventOn 9 June, members of the media from allaround the world had an opportunity to seethe GoalControl-4D technology in action atthe Maracanã.Following a short presentation on thereasons behind the use of goal-linetechnology and its functionality, the mediarepresentatives were able to wear thereferees’ watch, which receives an indicationof “GOAL” within one second of the ballcrossing the line.
