150 clichés distillés dans les salles de la
Pinacothèque de Paris avec la parcimonie d’un
esthète porté par un classicisme dépouillé de tout
artifice. Il avoue « aimer particulièrement la
photographie de la fin du XIX e et du début du XX e
siècle. J’ai une passion pour Stieglitz, Steichen,
Clarence White, Demachy et Alvin Langdon
Coburn… La photographie allemande des années
20, et tous ceux qu’elle a influencés par la suite,
comme Helmut Newton, Peter Lindbergh ou Ellen
von Unwerth, me touche très profondément. »
A-t-il un style ? « Je n’en sais rien. C’est au
visiteur de me le dire. Je n’ai pas un style, mais
plusieurs, ou aucun. Il ne faut jamais rester
immobile, ni dans la vie, ni dans la mode ou la
photographie. » Eric Pfrunder, co-commissaire de
l’exposition avec Gerhard Steidl, présente une
riche palette des techniques photographiques de
Lagerfeld.

The exhibition reflects the man in its attention to
detail, its elegance and its high standards. There
is meticulousness in the choice of frames and
lighting, elegance in the rather precious
refinement of the subjects, and high standards
where the presentation of photographic works is
concerned. In all, more than 150 photos are
spread across the halls of the Pinacothèque de
Paris with the parsimony of an aesthete carried
along on a wave of classicism stripped of all
pretentiousness. He admits to being “especially
fond of photography from the end of the 19 th to
the beginning of the 20 th century. I am passionate
about Stieglitz, Steichen, Clarence White,
