La salle d’exposition de l’Hôtel des ventes Drouot “En voulez-vous ?”, “Sans regret ?”, “Adjugé !” Ces formules consacrées rythment la vie de l’hôtel Drouot depuis son édification en 1852 dans l’épicentre de Paris. Drouot et son particularisme affiché. Ici, on ne fait aucune différence entre tout-venant et pièces de prestige, contrairement à une autre institution, Sotheby’s, qui bannit les ventes dites courantes. C’est ainsi que Drouot est devenu la plus grande place mondiale de vente aux enchères publiques. 375 millions d’euros récoltés en 2014, 1 300 vacations annuelles ; 5 000 fidèles, néophytes ou connaisseurs se pressant avant l’ouverture des portes à 11 heures, à la recherche d’une affaire, d’une surprise, d’une émotion. « Nous sommes un musée éphémère », aime à rappeler Pauline de Montgolfier, responsable de la communication du groupe, qui nous a guidés dans les coulisses de l’établissement. Une mise en scène immuable Comprendre le fonctionnement du vaisseau Drouot, c’est avant tout décortiquer le mécanisme d’une vente. Décryptons le rôle tenu par chaque protagoniste. Il y a le “guest”, le commissairepriseur, distribuant la partition à la façon d’un chef d’orchestre. Le jour de notre visite, Rodolphe Tessier, de l’étude Tessier & Sarrou, officiait en haut de l’estrade. Salle archicomble pour la vente d’assiettes turques du XVI e siècle, dont les prix allaient atteindre des sommets (plus de 60 000 euros l’unité). En contrebas, voilà l’expert qui annonce les lots mis en vente, le clerc qui rédige le procès-verbal de la vente. Fendant le public, le “crieur” relaie les enchères dans la salle. Il délivre 2 DROUOT, THE COURTYARD AND THE GARDEN “Going once!” “Going twice!” “Sold!” These auctioning expressions have punctuated life at the Drouot hotel since it was built in the epicentre of Paris in 1852. Drouot puts its particularity on display. Here, no difference is made between prestigious pieces and ordinary items, unlike that other establishment, Sotheby’s, which prohibits run-of-the-mill sales. This is what made Drouot the biggest public auction hall in the world. 375 million euros made in 2014, 1,300 annual sessions, and 5,000 regular customers, newcomers or connoisseurs waiting for the doors to open at 11 am, in search of a bargain, a surprise or an emotion. “We are a temporary museum,” Pauline de Montgolfier reminds us. She is the group’s Communications Manager and our guide behind the scenes of the establishment. An unchanging stage play Understanding how the Drouot ship runs involves breaking down the mechanics of a sale. Let us decipher the role of each protagonist. There is the “guest star”, the auctioneer, who guides the proceedings like the head of an orchestra. On the day of our visit, Rodolphe Tessier, from the Tessier & Sarrou cabinet, was officiating at the top of the podium. The hall was packed for a sale of 16th century Turkish plates, the prices of which were to rocket (more than 60,000 euros each). Below him was the expert who announces the lots on sale and the clerk who drafts the official sale record. Pushing through the audience, the “crier” relays the auctions to the hall. 75
