Ci-contre, Gabrielle De Coco Chanel, on connaît la
Chanel au balcon de sa
grande couturière et la femme de
caractère. On sait surtout
joaillerie. Pour autant, les dés
sont lancés : la pionnière d’un
nouveau sens de l’élégance
vient de créer des petites
merveilles d’inspiration,
conçues, façonnées et
ciselées à l’image même
de l’effervescence
artistique de l’entre-deuxguerres.
Des merveilles
baignées d’un halo de
poésie moderne, qui puisent
leurs motifs dans le monde vu
comme une cosmogonie féérique.
RESOLUTELY CHANEL!
Coco Chanel was known as a skilled designer and
woman of character. We also know how the
combination of the two set the world of fashion
alight in the early 20 th century. This emancipated
designer introduced a new and different way of
dressing which was to give her the status, over
time, of “grande Mademoiselle” of haute couture.
To complete her concept of a “total look”, Coco
also came to concentrate her talents on jewellery,
those adjuncts to feminine elegance she partly
disapproved of. To be precise, she liked costume
jewellery which she could transform and play
around with as she wished. But she had no liking
whatsoever for formal or ostentatious jewellery
sets dripping with precious stones. Faithful to her
vision of things and as always with a wish to
change the established order, Chanel presented
her first jewellery collection in 1932, incurring the
wrath of the world of fine jewellery. But the die
was cast: this pioneer of a new style of elegance
had just created some inspired pieces, designed
and crafted to reflect the artistic buzz of the interwar
years. These marvels were bathed in the light
of poetic modernity, with designs inspired by a
view of the world as part of a magical universe.
Necklaces and bracelets were decorated not only
with comets, stars and suns but also with
camellias, ribbons and feathers. The diamond was
the centrepiece of the collection, with everything
else stripped back to the bare essentials with
luxurious simplicity.
Magnetic appeal
With this baptism of fire, Chanel forged its own
values in terms of jewellery making. Today, more
