del Turano. Ve ne sono però altri
che contano poco più di 200
abitanti ciascuno e si configurano
come autentici presidi delle attività
umane sulla montagna: Paganico,
Collegiove, Marcetelli, Varco Sabino (sede degli uffici della
Riserva Naturale).
Gli spazi a disposizione per le coltivazioni sono limitati a piccoli
orti e appezzamenti posti a ridosso dei centri abitati. I principali
prodotti della terra, dunque, sono i frutti del bosco e del sottobosco:
more, mirtilli, funghi, tartufi e, soprattutto, castagne,
che vengono ancora raccolte nei circa 600 ettari di castagneti da
frutto. Un vecchio detto sottolinea la loro importanza storica per
le povere economie locali: “Allu burghittu se nun fosse pe’ li frutti
se sariano morti tutti”. La varietà regina è la “castagna rossa del
Cicolano”, introdotta in epoca storica dalla Lombardia e perfettamente
adattata al clima e ai suoli di queste zone.
The Navegna and Cervia Mountains Regional Reserve
The shapes of the Navegna (1508 metres) and Cervia (1436 metres) mountains
divide the Salto lake from the one of Turano outlining wide and solitary landscapes
where time seems to go by with its own frequency.
The Reserve, spreading for about 36 sqkm, protects several significant environments:
cliffs, high-ground meadows, beech and chestnut woods as well as oak,
hornbeam and maple woods, the turbulent waters of the Obito and Riancoli
ditches. In the underwood suspiciously the wolf and the wild cat
pass through. Skies are streaked across by the perfect flight of the golden
eagle or, at night time, by the majestic and silent eagle owl.
The area is run through by a net of trails and sheep-tracks and surrounded
by a circle of small villages. Some of them have little more than
200 inhabitants and represent the remaining of human activities on the
mountains.
The areas ready to be cultivated are restricted into small vegetable gardens
and plots close to the villages. So, the main products from the
land are wood and berry fruits such as blackberries, bilberries,
mushrooms, truffles and, most of all, chestnuts that are still
picked up all over the 600 hectares of chestnut woods.
