ARGUMENT.<br />
IN tbe winter after tbe overtbrow of Troy, Aeneas builds a fieet (1-8).<br />
He sails witb a number of fellow-exiles in tbe spring or summer of tbe<br />
second year, and spends tbe winter in Tbracc, wbere be begins to found<br />
a city; but the sba<strong>de</strong> of Polydiirus warns bim to avoid the curset! land<br />
(8-68). In tbe tbird year, he goes to Delos, and consults tbe oracle,<br />
but, misinterpreting tbe response, stecrs for Creto instead of Italy (73-<br />
120). III omens and a plague retard tbe building of his rising city;<br />
but, warned by the gods, in the fifth year he directs his course to Italy<br />
(121-191). He is wafted in a storm to the Slrophlt<strong>de</strong>s, thence to Actium,<br />
where he celebrates games in honor of Apollo (192-290). In tbe<br />
sixtb year, be !nnds in Epirus, and Hnds it ruled over by nelenus, one<br />
of the sons of Priam, to whom, after the <strong>de</strong>ath of Pyrrhus, the kingdom<br />
bad fallen, and along with it Andromache, formerly the wife of nector.<br />
ne is received with great kindness, and instructed by IIelenus in all tho<br />
lllbors and dangers tbat yet await him on his voyage (291-505). Crossing<br />
to the Italian shore, he coasts southwal'd, approaches the district of<br />
Sicily near to Aetna, escapes tbe Cyclopes, and again stands out to Sell<br />
(506-683). Avoiding Scylla and Cbarybdis, ho reaches Drepanum,<br />
where his fULher Anchises dies; thence setting sail, he is driven to Carthage,<br />
wbere be arrives in tbe summer of tbe seventh year, probably as<br />
winter is drawing on (684-718).<br />
